As I went out the back door to get into our van to go for an appointment, Tuesday morning, I glanced at the backyard and saw that part of our favorite tree had come down during the storm we had in the early hours.
We had been watching this maple for a couple of years as it had some splitting showing up in the trunk. We teased our neighbor that his great new garage would have to be replaced if it went down. He said he would rather it go onto the old garage, and we said the same for our old garage. Except there is tons and tons of "stuff" stored in the garage belonging to several different people! We were concerned of possible damage to various areas of our yard and those of two of the neighbors. So I called to see about having the tree removed, we talked it over and he said to call back when I had the money - well, that was last fall. The same guy is to be here this evening to check it out.
The tree is a maple that my Dad planted in the mid 1970's, and has provided some lovely shade, plus it is a beautiful tree. The splitting we were watching in the trunk is the same as that we watched in the two trees that used to be in the front yard - they were also maples. There is some sort of fungus going around this town in the past 10 years that is eventually hitting all the maples. I can remember as a kid, all the elms in town having to come down.
