Elf

elf

Please read my Terms of Use at the bottom of this tutorial. I hate having to state them, but in this day and age, it is necessary.

I did the work for this tutorial in PSP version 9, but I am sure the technique would work in other versions as well. This is an Alpha Channel Selections tutorial, and I hope it is clear enough for anyone trying it. The canvas was saved as a psp, so it should also work in verson 8. Remember to save often.

To do this tutorial, you will need a basic knowledge of PSP and my Supplies.

In the supplies are a canvas psp and a psp image of the striped pattern. Both were made by me, so are safe to use! You are more than welcome to use your own pattern or colors of your choice. Be creative!

Unzip the Elf Canvas into a folder of your choice. I usually make a folder with the name of the tutorial and put the supplies in there for easy access.

Remember to save often! You can save it as a pspimage in the folder of your choice. (This is another reason I have a folder with the name of the tutorial, so that I can also put my pspimages in it to save and "play" with later!)

Step 1. Open the elf_canvas_ssg.psp in your PSP workspace, duplicate it and close the original. I will give directions for the colors I used, which are on their own layer in the canvas, but feel free to color the Elf parts with your choice of colors. Realize we don't use color # 4 - so just ignore it, please!

Step 2. Activate the legs layer in the Layer Palette (located at the bottom of the Layer Palette - we will be working up from the bottom of the palette). Go to Selections/Load-Save Selections/Load from Alpha Channel. Load the legs selection. Fill with "green_red_stripes_ssg.psp" or the color of your choice. Go to Selections/Float. Go to Effects/3 D Effects/Cutout. Use the following settings: V&H: 0; Opacity: 100; Blur: 25; Shadow color: #021e02 (if you use a color or another pattern, adjust the shadow color). Deselect by going to Selections/Select None or by holding down the Ctrl key and the D key on the keyboard. After this step, the directions will just say Float and Deselect.
