Fish 3



    Please read my Terms of Use at the bottom of this tutorial. I hate having to state them, but in this day and age, it is necessary.

    This tutorial is the third in a series of three fish tutorials. The first fish tutorials is the fish in a side view. The next fish tutorial is the fish turning, but the opposite way that this one is - so that you can use all three to make the fish swim around in a circle or ellipse as in a fish bowl or an aquarium. You can access the other two tutorials at the bottom of this page.

    I did the work for this tutorial in PSP version 9, but I am sure the technique would work in other versions as well. This is an Alpha Channel Selections tutorial, and I hope it is clear enough for anyone trying it. The canvas was saved as a psp, so it should also work in verson 8. Remember to save often.

    To do this tutorial, you will need a basic knowledge of PSP and my Fish 3 Canvas.


    Unzip the Fish 3 Canvas into a folder of your choice. I usually make a folder with the name of the tutorial and put the supplies in there for easy access.

    Remember to save often! You can save it as a pspimage in the folder of your choice. (This is another reason I have a folder with the name of the tutorial, so that I can also put my pspimages in it to save and "play" with later!)

    Step 1. Open the fish3_canvas_ssg.psp in your PSP workspace, duplicate it and close the original. I will give directions for the colors I used, which are on their own layer in the canvas, but feel free to color the fish with your choice of colors. You will notice there is a white background layer. I did this for ease in seeing the coloring of the image. You can change it or delete it as you want. My tutorials are only written the way I did them - and are suggestions for you. Use your imagination - get creative! : )

    Step 2. Activate the top fin layer in the Layer Palette. Go to Selections/Load-Save Selections/Load from Alpha Channel. Load the top fin selection. Fill with color # 2. Go to Selections/Float. Go to Effects/3D Effects/Cutout. Use the following settings: V&H: 5; Opacity: 100; Blur: 20; Shadow color: #fc8c03. Reapply with the V&H at minus 5. Deselect by going to Selections/Select None or by holding down the Ctrl key and the D key on the keyboard.

    Step 3. Activate the top fin lines layer. Load the top fin lines selection. Fill with color # 1. Deselect.

    Step 4. Activate the R eye layer. Load the R eye selection. Fill with black. Selections/Modify/Contract: 1. Fill on the same layer with white. Deselect. Effects/3D Effects/Inner Bevel. Use the following settings: Bevel: 2; Width: 15; Smoothness: 40; Depth: 1; Ambience: 0; Shininess: 80; Color: white; Angle: 315; Intensity: 25; Elevation: 40.

    Step 5. Activate the R inner eye layer. Load the R inner eye selection. Fill with black. Deselect. Apply the following Inner Bevel: Bevel: 2; Width: 14; Smoothness: 15; Depth: 12; Ambience: 0; Shininess: 50; Color: white; Angle: 222; Intensity: 70; Elevation: 30. This is the round preset with the angle changed.

    Step 6. Activate the R eye lid layer. Load the eye lid selection. Fill with color # 1. Selections/Modify/Contract: 1. Fill with color # 2 on the same layer. Deselect. Apply the following Inner Bevel: Bevel: 2; Width: 15; Smoothness: 40; Depth: 1; Ambience: 0; Shininess: 80; Color: #ffb24e; Angle: 315; Intensity: 25; Elevation: 40.

    Step 7. Activate the body layer. Load the body selection. Fill with color # 2. Float and use the following Cutout settings: V&H: 10; Opacity: 100; Blur: 30; Shadow color: #fc8c03. Reapply with the V&H at minus 10. Deselect.

    Step 8. Activate the body lines layer. Load the body lines selection. Fill with color # 4. Deselect.

    Step 9. Activate the tail layer. Load the tail selection. Fill with color # 2. Float and use the following Cutout settings: V&H: 5; Opacity: 100; Blur: 20; Shadow color: #fc8c03. Reapply with the V&H at minus 5. Deselect. We are using the same Cutout for both fins and the tail.

    Step10. Activate the tail lines layer. Load the tail lines selection. Fill with color # 1. Deselect.

    Step 11. Activate the mouth layer. Load the mouth selection. Fill with black. Deselect.

    Step 12. Activate the lower lip layer. Load the lower lip selection. Fill with color # 1. Selections/Modify/Contract: 1. Fill with color # 2 on the same layer. Deselect. Apply the following Inner Bevel: Bevel: 2; Width: 15; Smoothness: 40; Depth: 1; Ambience: 0; Shininess: 80; Color: #ffb24e; Angle: 315; Intensity: 25; Elevation: 40. This is the same Inner Bevel used on the eye lid.

    Step 13. Activate the upper lip layer. Load the upper lip selection. Fill with color # 1. Selections/Modify/Contract: 1. Fill with color # 2 on the same layer. Deselect. Apply the same Inner Bevel we just used on the lower lip.

    Step 14. Activate the side fin layer. Load the side fin selection. Fill with color # 2. Float. Use the following Cutout settings: V&H: 5; Opacity: 100; Blur: 20; Shadow color: #fc8c03. Reapply with the V&H at minus 5. Deselect. We are using the same Cutout for both fins and the tail.

    Step 15. Activate the side fin lines layer. Load the side fin lines selection. Fill with color # 1. Deselect.

    Step 16. Activate the L eye layer. Load the eye selection. Fill with black. Selections/Modify/Contract: 1. Fill on the same layer with white. Deselect. Effects/3D Effects/Inner Bevel. Use the following settings: Bevel: 2; Width: 15; Smoothness: 40; Depth: 1; Ambience: 0; Shininess: 80; Color: white; Angle: 315; Intensity: 25; Elevation: 40.

    Step 17. Activate the L inner eye layer. Load the inner eye selection. Fill with black. Deselect. Apply the following Inner Bevel: Bevel: 2; Width: 14; Smoothness: 15; Depth: 12; Ambience: 0; Shininess: 50; Color: white; Angle: 222; Intensity: 70; Elevation: 30. This is the round preset with the angle changed.

    Congratulations! Your Fish 3 is finished! You can now delete the colors layer, and do a final save. You can add a background and play with your image.

      Here is an example of my three fishes swimming in a fish bowl. To fit in this size bowl, I had to resize each fish 40% then 60%. I used 12 layers of fish - if I had used more, it would show a bit smoother and also could have a slower frame speed than 20, but I was trying to get this finished in a short time. Take your time, and go for more fish layers in yours to make it smoother. Have fun, be creative!
