final leprechaun

Leprechaun in Wheelbarrow

Please read my Terms of Use at the bottom of this tutorial. I hate having to state them, but in this day and age, it is necessary.

I did this tutorial at the request of my friend Kathie. Thank you for the great idea, Kathie!

The work for this tutorial was done in PSP version 9, but I am sure the technique would work in other versions as well. This is an Alpha Channel Selections tutorial, and I hope it is clear enough for anyone trying it. The canvas and the others items were saved as a psp, so they should also work in verson 8. Remember to save often.

To do this tutorial, you will need a basic knowledge of PSP and my Supplies.

Unzip the leprechaun_canvas2_ssg.psp into a folder of your choice. I usually make a folder with the name of the tutorial and put the supplies in there for easy access. I have also included several psp's in the folder for the coins, bow tie and eyes etc. - since these were too difficult to just fill with color to create. The selections are on their proper layers, but you fill the selections with the psp's. I made each of the psp's, so they are safe to use. You may use any of your own though if you want. I offer the directions merely as a guide for you. Be creative and use your imagination.

Remember to save often! You can save it as a pspimage in the folder of your choice. (This is another reason I have a folder with the name of the tutorial, so that I can also put my pspimages in it to save and "play" with later!)

Step 1. Open the leprechaun_canvas2_ssg.psp in your PSP workspace, duplicate it and close the original. The colors I used are on their own layer and numbered. Feel free to use your own colors instead of mine. My tutorials are only written the way I did them - and are suggestions for you. Use your imagination - get creative! : )

Step 2. Activate the spokes layer in the Layer Palette. Go to Selections/Load-Save Selections/Load from Alpha Channel. Load the spokes selection. Fill with color # 1. Selections/Float. Effects/3D Effects/Cutout. Use the following Cutout settings: V&H: 0; Opacity: 50; Blur: 10; Shadow color: black. Deselect by going to Selections/Select none or by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking on the D key.

Your Leprechaun in Wheelbarrow is finished! Now is the time to do a final save, delete the colors layer and add any embellishments you want! Have fun! I resized and cropped my image for display here.

final leprechaun

Part of the request by Kathie was to make the leprechaun look like a porcelain figurine. I applied Eye Candy 4 to almost every layer. For those who only have Eye Candy 3, I have also included the settings for that.

Eye Candy 3

Step 46. I applied Eye Candy 3 to all layers except the shading layers and the coin layers. I also merged all the parts of the face down to the head layer to apply the glass effect to the head. It looked better than doing it to each layer. I tried merging the entire image and then applying the EC 3 (and EC 4) and it didn't look very good. The following screen shot shows the settings for Eye Candy 3. (If you have Eye Candy 4, skip this and go to Step. 49.)

Step 47. With the application of the EC 3 glass, the edges of the various parts of the leprechaun image were very light, so I merged all the layers of the leprechaun. Effects/3D Effects/Drop Shadow. I added a slight Drop Shadow of V&H: 0; Opacity: 100; Blur: 5; Shadow color: Black.

EC 3

This is my result with the Eye Candy 3 - with the image cropped and resized.

Eye Candy 4

Step 48. I applied Eye Candy 4 to all layers except the shading layers and the coin layers. With the finer details of EC 4, I was able to apply it to each part of the face without merging onto the head layer. The following screen shot shows the settings for Eye Candy 4. Basic: Bevel Width: 10.80; Smoothness: 75; Inside marquee - checked; Edge Darkening: 16; Gradient Shading: 14; Refraction: 50; Opacity: 0; Tinting: 50; Glass Color: white. Lighting: Direction: 135; Inclination: 45; Highlight Brightness: 100; Highlight Size: 40; Highlight Color: white; Ripple Thickness: 0; Ripple Width: 72; Random Seed: 1. Bevel Profile: Button.

Note: If you notice that after you apply the glass setting to the body (tummy) it doesn't really show, in EC 4, you can vary the settings. One of the preset settings is for "Sage" - you could use this, but change the color to a light green. This is entirely up to you, though.

EC4_basic       EC4_bevel       EC4_lighting

I did have to change the lighting for the head and the hair layers, but only for those two layers. Settings: Lighting: Direction: 228; Inclination: 7; Highlight Brightness: 100; Highlight Size: 40; Highlight Color: white; Ripple Thickness: 0; Ripple Width: 72; Random Seed: 1.
