Mama and Baby Flamingos

Please read my Terms of Use at the bottom of this tutorial. I hate having to state them, but in this day and age, it is necessary.

I did the work for this tutorial in PSP version 9, but I am sure the technique would work in other versions as well. This is an Alpha Channel Selections tutorial, and I hope it is clear enough for anyone trying it. Remember to save often.

To do this tutorial, you will need a basic knowledge of PSP and my Flamingo Supplies.

Mama Flamingo

Baby Flamingo

Unzip the Flamingo Supplies into a folder of your choice. I usually make a folder with the name of the tutorial and put the supplies in there for easy access. Within the Baby Flamingo zip is the canvas for the baby, which we will be working on first. In the Mama Flamingo zip, is the canvas and I also have included a gradient for the beak. It is from the gradients in PSP Version 8, so will work in all the current versions. If you don't already have this, place it in your Gradient folder.

Remember to save often! You can save it as a pspimage in the folder of your choice. (This is another reason I have a folder with the name of the tutorial, so that I can also put my pspimages in it to save and "play" with later!)

Baby Flamingo

Step 1. Open the baby_flamingo_canvas_ssg.pspimage into your PSP workspace, duplicate it and close the original. I will give directions for the colors I used, which are on their own layer in the canvas, but feel free to color the flamingo with your choice of colors. I used colors from a photo to get them as close as possible to the real thing. I also put a temp bg layer in with a dark blue. This will help the image show up better while you are working on it. You can delete it later.

SAVE

Step 2. Activate the R leg layer in the Layer Palette. Go to Selections/Load-Save Selections/Load from Alpha Channel. Load the R leg selection. Fill with color # 3. Go to Selections/Float. Go to Effects/3D Effects/Cutout and use the following settings: V&H: 0; Opacity: 100; Blur: 15; Shadow color: black. Deselect by going to Selections/Select None or by holding down the Ctrl key and the D key on the keyboard.

Step 9. Open the mama_flamingo_canvas_ssg.pspimage into your PSP workspace, duplicate it and close the original. I used colors from the same photo that had the baby, so that is why they vary from what you might think of for the colors. However, you may use any colors you want.

Draw lines similar to the ones shown in the screen shot on each foot, and then a bit on each knee. Both screen shots have been enlarged for better viewing - and also if you zoom to 150%, you will find it easier to apply the brush on each area.

Congratulations! Your Mama Flamingo is finished! You can now delete the colors layer, and do a final save. You can add a background and add the baby flamingo.

You will have to resize your baby to fit with the Mama Flamingo. You can use the same placement of the baby as I have done in my image or you can place him as you want.
