Snowman with Birdhouse

snowman

Please read my Terms of Use at the bottom of this tutorial. I hate having to state them, but in this day and age, it is necessary.

I did the work for this tutorial in PSP version 9, but I am sure the technique would work in other versions as well. This is an Alpha Channel Selections tutorial, and I hope it is clear enough for anyone trying it. The canvas was saved as a psp, so it should also work in verson 8. Remember to save often.

To do this tutorial, you will need a basic knowledge of PSP and my Supplies.

In the supplies is a canvas psp. There is also psp's of a heart and a hat that I used for the snowman. I made both of these, so it is ok for you to use. If you have another heart or hat you would prefer to use, please use what you want! You are more than welcome to use the colors of your choice and anything you want for the Snowman to hold. Be creative!

Unzip the Snowman Canvas and the two psp's into a folder of your choice. I usually make a folder with the name of the tutorial and put the supplies in there for easy access.

Remember to save often! You can save it as a pspimage in the folder of your choice. (This is another reason I have a folder with the name of the tutorial, so that I can also put my pspimages in it to save and "play" with later!)

Step 1. Open the snowman_birdhouse_canvas_ssg.psp in your PSP workspace, duplicate it and close the original. I will give directions for the colors I used, which are on their own layer in the canvas, but feel free to color the Snowman and birdhouse parts with your choice of colors.

SAVE

Step 2. Activate the body layer in the Layer Palette (located at the bottom of the Layer Palette - we will be working up from the bottom of the palette). Go to Selections/Load-Save Selections/Load from Alpha Channel. Load the body selection. Fill with color # 1 or the color of your choice. Go to Selections/Float. Go to Effects/3 D Effects/Cutout. Use the following settings: V&H: 0; Opacity: 100; Blur: 50; Shadow color: #76acfc (if you use a color or another pattern, adjust the shadow color). Deselect by going to Selections/Select None or by holding down the Ctrl key and the D key on the keyboard. After this step, the directions will just say Float and Deselect.

Note: Some of the Cutouts and the Inner Bevels are used several times - the image showing the settings will not always say the certain part we are working on - such as the pole bevel is also used for the base, house and roof, but the image says pole. Hope this isn't too confusing!

Step 3. Activate the shoes layer. Load the shoes selection. Fill with color # 6, or color of your choice. Float. Use the following Cutout settings: V&H: 0; Opacity: 100; Blur: 35; Shadow color: #281302. Deselect.
