Sweet Kitty

Please read my Terms of Use at the bottom of this tutorial. I hate having to state them, but in this day and age, it is necessary.

I did the work for this tutorial in PSP version 9, but I am sure the technique would work in other versions as well. This is an Alpha Channel Selections tutorial, and I hope it is clear enough for anyone trying it. The canvas was saved as a psp, so it should also work in verson 8. Remember to save often.

To do this tutorial, you will need a basic knowledge of PSP and my Supplies.

Unzip the sweet_kitty_canvas_ssg.psp into a folder of your choice. I usually make a folder with the name of the tutorial and put the supplies in there for easy access. I offer the directions merely as a guide for you. Be creative and use your imagination.

Remember to save often! You can save it as a pspimage in the folder of your choice. (This is another reason I have a folder with the name of the tutorial, so that I can also put my pspimages in it to save and "play" with later!)

Step 1. Open the sweet_kitty_canvas_ssg.psp in your PSP workspace, duplicate it and close the original. The colors I used are on their own layer and numbered. Feel free to use your own colors instead of mine. My tutorials are only written the way I did them - and are suggestions for you. Use your imagination - get creative! : ) You will notice one layer has a red x on it - that means the visibility is turned off. This is the eyes layer. I will give directions for it when we get to that layer.

Step 2. Activate the back leg layer in the Layer Palette. Go to Selections/Load-Save Selections/Load from Alpha Channel. Load the back leg selection. Fill with white. Selections/Invert. Effects/3D Effects/Drop Shadow. Use the following Drop Shadow settings: V&H: 3; Opacity: 30; Blur: 15; Shadow color: #808080. Reapply the Drop Shadow with the V&H at minus 3. Deselect by going to Selections/Select none or by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking on the D key.

Step 3. Activate the body layer. Load the body. Fill with white. Invert. Use the same Drop Shadow settings, but change the Blur to 25. Remember to reapply with the V&H at minus 3. Deselect.

Step 4. Activate the body shading layer. Load the body shading. Fill with black. {Note: I had problems filling this selection when I did it, so I used black and had to fill it several times just to get any color to appear. However, it should be a dark gray in appearance, so try using #808080, to fill. This is really the color it should be.} Deselect.

Step 5. Activate the front leg layer. Load the front leg selection. Fill with white. Invert. Use the same Drop Shadow just used, remembering to reapply it with the V&H at minus 3. Deselect.

Step 6. Activate the inner ears layer. Load the inner ears selection. Fill with color # 1. Invert. Use the same Drop Shadow, but change the Blur to 15. Reapply with the V&H at minus 3. Deselect.

This is how the image should look so far.
